Global Justice is a group of students of all ages who work on a wide range of issues in school, raising awareness as well as seeking to provide practical assistance. Last year we achieved Fairaware status in recognition of all the work we do on Fairtrade and are now working towards Fairaware status. You may have seen us at the Winter Fair bringing the message of Fairtrade to the wider school community, as well as events in school. At Christmas we encouraged students to send Christmas cards to those who Amnesty International identified as being persecuted for their willingness to stand up for justice in their countries. We also co-ordinated a shoebox campaign through Operation Christmas Child which saw 67 Christmas shoeboxes go to Kosovo to needy children there. In March we heard first hand from two people who were part of the group who delivered our shoeboxes to children whose lives are still recovering from the impact of civil war. In the autumn they will return to help us launch our next campaign with their powerful stories. In February we celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight. Some of our Year 8 and 9 students undertook training as peer educators and then taught students from other schools about the banana trade as part of the Fairtrade Celebration at Leeds Civic Hall. They also got to do chocolate tasting and making wallets out of recycled juice cartons so had a great time! In school students took assemblies and ran Fairtrade stalls for both students and staff, as well as Year 10 taking part in the Chocolates Game in PHSCE. It was great to hear students reflecting on how fortunate we are and resolving to work for a fairer world by buying Fairtrade.
