BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate Applied Science Who is it suitable for? Those who have enjoyed studying Science at GCSE (especially the practical aspects), who have Grade 5s or above in Triple or Trilogy Sciences, English and Maths. What does the course involve? This is an A level equivalent course completed over 2 years. In year 1 Units 1 and 2 are completed. Unit 1 is called Principles and Applications of Science, and comprises of a Biology, Chemistry unit that is assessed by examination at the end of the year. Unit 2 is called Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques and is assessed through four assignments. 1 of which is a Physics investigation, 2 are Chemistry investigations and finally a self reflection task. During Year 2 students study a further two modules. Unit 3 is called Science Investigation Skills, and is assessed with a practical exam. Unit 8 is called Physiology of Human Body Systems, and is assessed through three separate assignments. What next? The course is suitable for anyone who would like to take a broad approach to studying Science at GCE level rather than specialising in one area. Previous students have taken the course as a route into nursing and related work, as a foundation subject to access teacher training, or simply because they enjoy Science.
