What do I need to study the course? To access this course you will need to have studied an Additional Science GCSE or Biology GCSE and will need a total of two good B grades in Science GCSEs. Good literacy and mathematical skills are also essential, so we ask for at least a C grade in English Language and Mathematics. What does the course involve? The Biology course consists of eight units, or four if you decide to just complete an AS level. Many of the units build on topics that you will have already studied at GCSE level; for example unit two includes further development of the cell model. Other units will cover material that is new to you, such as in unit eight where you will look at how genes are controlled. You will study biochemistry in some detail, looking at the chemistry of the main food groups, as well as details of the processes of photosynthesis and respiration. You will look at the physiology of the nervous, endocrine and digestive systems and will learn about genetics and evolution. Homoeostatic mechanisms will be explored in more detail than at GCSE and ecological relationships will be thoroughly examined. Practical work forms an important part of the Biology A Level, with a practical endorsement available for those who provide sufficient evidence of their skills in this area. Assessment of the A level is through three exams, which include a mixture of short and long answer questions, data analysis, comprehension and an essay. What next? The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in the living world. Previous students have studied this course to help them access Biology related university courses, biochemistry, medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences and as a foundation subject to access teacher training. The course is widely respected and develops the skills that will act as a gateway to many other degree subjects and areas of work too.
