What do I need to study the course? To access this course you will need to have studied an Additional Science GCSE or Chemistry GCSE and will need a total of two good B grades in Science GCSEs. Good literacy and mathematical skills are also essential, so we ask for at least a C grade in English Language and Mathematics. What does the course involve? The OCR Chemistry B (Salters) course is assessed by two external examinations at AS, or three at A2. The AS and A2 courses are standalone, as the AS course no longer counts towards the A level in Chemistry. At AS level, four modules are covered. They are - Module 1: Development of Practical Skills, Module 2: Foundations in Chemistry, Module 3: The Periodic Table and Energy and Module 4: Core Organic Chemistry. Practical skills are assessed through examination, with the content covered in Module 1. If you decide instead to study Chemistry to a full A level, you will cover these four modules plus two more, Module 5: Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements and Module 6: Organic Chemistry and Analysis. You will also gain a separate practical skills endorsement on the two year A level course, based on teacher assessments. With the Chemistry B (Salters) course, you will study chemistry in a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary chemistry. Ideas are introduced in a spiral way with topics introduced in an early part of the course reinforced later. This course will place a particular emphasis on an investigational and problem-solving approach to practical work and is supported by extensive new materials developed by the University of York Science Education Group. What next? The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in Chemistry. Previous students have studied this course to help them access Chemistry related university courses, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, medicine and related medical courses.
