You should LOVE mathematics You should have gained a grade 8 or 9 at GCSE Further Mathematics is an AS/A - level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in AS/A level Mathematics. All assessment is by examination (Edexcel) What does the course involve? In addition to deepening the A Level content, this introduces complex numbers and matrices Paper 1: Further pure Maths (1.5 hours) Paper 2: Further Maths option (1.5 hours) Choose from: Further Pure Further Statistics Further Mechanics Decision Maths A Level Further Maths What do I need to study the course? You should LOVE mathematics. You should have gained a grade 8 or 9 at GCSE What does the course involve? As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A level mathematics, the A level further mathematics core content introduces complex numbers and matrices, fundamental mathematical ideas with wide applications in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences and computing. The non-core content includes different options that can enable students to specialise in areas of mathematics that are particularly relevant to their interests and future aspirations. All assessment is by examination (Edexcel). There are 4 papers to be taken at the end of year 13. Paper 1: Further Pure Maths 1 (1.5 hours) Paper 2: Further Pure Maths 2 (1.5 hours) Paper 3: Further Maths option 1 (1.5 hours) Paper 4: Further Maths option 2 (1.5 hours) NOTE: All options are the same as those available in AS Level Further Maths Why study Further Mathematics? Students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience. For someone who enjoys mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts. It enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in the university and employment market. It makes the transition to a mathematics-rich university course easier. Some prestigious university courses will only accept students with Further Mathematics qualifications. What next? Any student planning to take a mathematics-rich degree (this covers a very wide range of academic areas - Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc., as well as Mathematics itself) will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics, at least to AS level. Students who are not planning to study for mathematics-rich degrees but who are keen on mathematics will find Further Mathematics a very enjoyable course and having a Further Mathematics qualification identifies students as having excellent analytical skills, whatever area they plan to study or work within.
