What do I need to study the course? GCSE passes in English Language and Maths at grade C or above are required. GCSE Geography at grade C or above is preferable but not essential. What does the course involve? Geography is a subject which engages with the relationship of human populations to each other over space and time and their relationship with their physical environment at a variety of scales from the local to the global. All the units specified in AQA GCE Geography offer opportunities for you to consider: your own roles, values and attitudes in relation to themes and issues being studied the roles, values and attitudes of others including decision makers. Component 1: Physical Geography Section A: Water and Carbon Cycles Section B: either Hot desert environments and their margins or Coastal systems and landscapes Section C: either Hazards or Ecosystems under stress or Cold environments Written Exam- 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of A Level) Component 2: Human Geography Section A: Global systems and global governance Section B: Changing places Section C: either Contemporary urban environments or Population and the environment or Resource security Written Exam- 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of A Level) Component 3: Geographical investigation Students complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. Coursework- 3,000-4,000 words (20% of A Level). What next? Where can you go? Anywhere! Geography has a wide range of transferable skills which means that geographers are literate and numerate which makes them highly employable. Many geographers have continued to study the subject at university but others have used Geography as a stepping stone to study other subjects such as Geology, Engineering, Planning and Environmental Science. It is valid for different career paths like law, social sciences, advertising, accountancy, or environmental management. *The Geography A Level specification is currently in draft form.
