Here at Abbey Grange we offer both French and Spanish in the Sixth Form. The information below applies to both subjects. What do I need to study the course? To access this course successfully you will need to have studied French / Spanish at GCSE level and attained a grade B or above. You should have an interest in the language and the culture of the countries where the language is spoken. What does the course involve? An A Level Modern Language course will build on your GCSE knowledge and help you to develop your written and spoken language, as well as your grammatical understanding and cultural awareness. It fosters a range of transferable skills, including communication, critical thinking and creativity. We follow the AQA Specification at AS and A Level and the subject content is as follows: AS Current trends; Changing nature of family, The role of technology, The place of voluntary work Artistic culture; Culture, Music, Cinema Grammar Study of a book or film A Level Builds on AS content plus the following: Current issues; Features of a diverse society, Life for the marginalised, How criminals are treated Political life; Teenagers and political commitment, Demonstrations and strikes, Politics and Immigration Grammar A second book or film Authentic listening and reading materials from the Internet, TV and DVDs will be used alongside text books and workbooks. You will also have at least one weekly conversation lesson with a native speaker. A work experience placement abroad may be arranged to help improve your language skills and knowledge of the language studied. The course is assessed through the following: AS Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing (40%) Paper 2: Writing (30%) Paper 3: Speaking (30%) A Level Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing (40%) Paper 2: Writing (30%) Paper 3: Speaking (30%) What next? Studying modern languages will give you excellent career opportunities and skills for today’s international market. Knowledge of another language makes you infinitely more employable. Most universities allow you to combine another subject with modules of a language and offer possibilities to spend a year abroad.
