Article By: NCS Programme Published Date: 16/12/2016 Abbey Grange C of E Academy in Leeds has been recognised as a Champion School for its success in supporting over 70 Y11 and Y12 students to take part in the government-backed National Citizen Service (NCS) programme in summer 2016. Students were among over 800 young people from Leeds aged 16-17 who dedicated their summers to building new skills and partnering with local charities and organisations to volunteer in the community. One Abbey Grange student described NCS as “seriously the best thing ever”, adding that she had “gained confidence in speaking” and “made amazing friends” and was most proud of the community project her team had done with IntoUniversity. The NCS Champion School plaque is awarded to only 2 schools in the Leeds area and was presented at Abbey Grange’s annual presentation evening, among celebrations of many student achievements. The Morley Academy in Leeds, Kettlethorpe High School in Wakefield and Dixons City Academy in Bradford have also been awarded NCS Champion School status for 2015/16. Kay Brown, Chaplain at Abbey Grange, has worked closely with local provider The Challenge to encourage students to sign up, and told us, “NCS is a great opportunity for our students and I’m thrilled that so many of our students got involved this year. It allows them to do things that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do and empowers them to be the people they were made to be – the impact has been absolutely brilliant. I’d really recommend it to anyone to get involved in.” Tanisa Gunesekera, NCS Relationship Manager at social integration charity, The Challenge, added, “Abbey Grange has a very special sense of community and it has been a pleasure working with such dedicated Academy staff this year to offer students the opportunity to develop their skills by connecting with the wider community and with young people from across the city. This award is in recognition of the academy’s partnership but also the fantastic contribution that students have made in Leeds.” For more information on the NCS programme, visit www.ncsthechallenge.org.
