What to do when making an application to Abbey Grange:
Students applying for A Level courses should make an application appropriate to their target grades. Students expecting to gain all GCSE results (not including BTEC Courses) at Grade B/5 and above should apply for 5 courses. They should show a preference for the first 4 and state which other course is their reserve. Students expecting to gain GCSE results (not including BTEC Courses) at mainly C/4 should apply for 4 courses. They should show a preference for the first 3 and state which other course is their reserve.
A Levels are much more intellectually challenging than GCSEs and even students with top GCSE grades sometimes struggle with this adjustment. There is a considerable jump from the level of study required at GCSE to that needed at A level or on other Level 3 courses. In particular, you need to take responsibility for your own learning and not just rely on your teachers telling you what to do – become a truly independent learner. If you manage this transition then you will find that you start to enjoy studying the subjects you have chosen and the work will seem to become easier. Year 12 passes very quickly – you really have only two terms of teaching – and it is vital that you establish a confident understanding of your new courses as soon as possible.
To help you do this your A Level teachers have prepared some induction tasks, designed to give you background knowledge and a flavour of what you can expect in the subject. It is our requirement that you complete all the induction tasks for each subject you intend to choose and bring them to the registration day. You will not be allowed to sign onto your chosen courses unless you have completed the work.
You will need to download the file and complete the relevant sections electronically. Please note that the work for A Level Maths/ Further Maths is in a separate booklet.
Many of you have chosen subjects at A Level that you have not studied before. It is particularly important in these subjects that you tackle the tasks thoughtfully to confirm your interest in taking lessons in the subject every day in Year 12.
In order to start studying A levels you should have at least 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, preferably with a grade B/5 in the A level subjects or higher in certain subjects (Maths and Sciences). However, it is advisable to check with individual subject areas if they have any other requirements.
If you do not have a grade 4 in Maths and English, there is the opportunity to attend classes and re sit your exam whilst studying for your A Levels. Passes at Level 2 in vocational qualifications (BTECs) will be accepted as equivalent to GCSE, where appropriate, for entry to Applied A level courses.
